Polyvagal Mapping Tool

Polyvagal Ladder & Somatic Worksheet

The Polyvagal Ladder (created by Deb Dana, LCSW) helps you track your autonomic nervous system states. Use this interactive worksheet to identify what each rung feels like in your body, record your triggers and glimmers, and select custom somatic anchors.

🌱 1. Ventral Vagal State (Safe & Social)

Top of the Ladder: Calm, connected, grounded, open, mindful, and present.

⚡ 2. Sympathetic State (Fight / Flight)

Middle of the Ladder: Anxious, angry, overwhelmed, panicked, restless, or hyper-vigilant.

🧊 3. Dorsal Vagal State (Shutdown / Freeze)

Bottom of the Ladder: Numb, exhausted, disconnected, dissociated, hopeless, or heavy.

Somatic Regulation Practices

Select or practice these vagal nerve regulation techniques when navigating autonomic shifts:

Vagal Cue

1. Somatic Orienting

Slowly turn your head left and right. Allow your eyes to linger on objects that feel neutral or soothing. Name 3 comforting colors around you.

Heart Rate Variability

2. Extended Exhalation

Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly through pursed lips for 6 to 8 seconds. Longer exhales engage the Ventral Vagal brake.

Proprioceptive Safety

3. Self-Soothing Touch

Place one hand over your heart and one hand on your belly, or give yourself a gentle squeeze on the arms. Notice the warmth and support of your hands.

Vagus Stimulation

4. Vocal Humming / Voicing

Gently hum or make a deep "Vuu..." sound on your exhale. The vibrations directly stimulate the vagus nerve passing through the throat.
